I’ve suffered from serious constipation almost my entire life without even realizing it. My primary care doctor NEVER asked me about my bathroom habits. It took a visit to a Colon Hydrotherapist that revealed how backed up things really were (more about my experience here). I was also struggling with cystic acne at the time and the connection was quite clear. Plus those Starbucks Chai Lattes I drank multiple times a day, like they were water, might had something do with my health issues. It took quite a few months to get my stomach working regularly and it involved daily green smoothies, chia and flax seeds as well as some Smooth Move tea…
Now I eat mostly vegan, have cut down sugar a lot from what it used to be and my stomach is working normally. I start my day with warm lemon water (drink it through stainless steel straw to protect tooth enamel) and only have breakfast if I’m hungry. I used to force myself to eat breakfast because “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, but most of the time I don’t want breakfast. So I don’t force myself. When I get hungry I have a green smoothie. It’s mostly dark leafy greens and just one part fruit for sweetness (either pear, banana, apple or pineapple). I notice that green smoothie fits me better than grains in the morning. If I have oatmeal I usually have it quite late, between 10am-11am. Sometimes I top it with fruits for sweetness, but fruits are always best eaten on an empty stomach by itself for better digestion. By improving digestion, we end up feeling more energetic. If I feel low in energy I add bee pollen or/and hemp protein.
Another proven approach to a great digestion is to not drink liquids during meals. Cold liquid dilutes your naturally occurring digestive enzymes and stomach acids which makes it harder to break down food. If you are chewing your food properly and creating saliva you should be able to eat comfortably. Drink water or other liquids 20 mins before you consume food and wait at least an hour after.
Kimberly Snyder was one of the first holistic wellness people I started following through her blog and her book The Beauty Detox Solution was a real eye-opener for me.
