Women in Wellness: Vanessa Méril-Mamert

Vanessa Méril-Mamert is a French Caribbean Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, creator of nourishing and beautifying recipes, and a yoga enthusiast. She lives in Paris, France and her goal is to inspire women of all colors and cultures to live a vibrant healthy fabulous life, and be the woman they want to be. Her credo is “Eat healthy, be pretty and feel fabulous!”. Vanessa and I were classmates at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and I’m so happy that we’re still in touch, and that she agreed to be part of the “Women in Wellness” series. Here’s my chat with Vanessa whom I’m hoping to visit in Paris very soon!

Your food philosophy

Hello! My philosophy to food is to enjoy everything that mother Nature has to offer as a mean to a vibrant and healthy life. Prepare each meal with love, make it fun and share it with yourself and others: healthy food is love, laughter and deliciousness. I believe in nourishing and beautifying food that make you feel and look fabulous from the inside out. It all starts with whole, vibrant, colorful ingredients: fresh and organic produce from the farmers market, and superfoods to boost your meals. I love a good quality green powder to add to my smoothies, anti-inflammatory turmeric to spice my veggies, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil for the beauty boosting good fats.

I eat mainly land and sea vegetables, fruits and herbs rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Wild caught fish, pastured raised meats, free range organic eggs a few times a week. Bring variety and balance in each meal with plenty of colorful vegetables, healthful fats, proteins, and carbohydrates like gluten free grains, legumes, starchy vegetables, or fruit. These macro and micro nutrients promote health of each of your cells and beauty from the inside out, supporting your body’s ability to detox, balance your hormones and produce plenty of energy on a daily basis, with each bite.

This said, I think healthy eating is not an all size fits all! This concept of bio-individuality: each person has very specific needs for his or her own health according to age, constitution, gender, size, lifestyle and ancestry. As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I wanna tell you that you can forget about counting calories, fat grams, and carbs. Instead, I’ll help you create that perfect eating approaches that works for you.

Dream breakfast

Well, it depends if I’m hungry of not. I like sourdough bread with sunny side up eggs, plus a green salad. Or a vegetable quiche. Eggs are really nourishing for me in the morning.

Daily breakfast

A protein smoothie made with a banana, rice protein and wheat grass powder, and almond milk or kefir milk. Easy, quick and yum. I drink it on the go.

Morning ritual

When I wake up I first drink hot water and lemon, then a herbal infusion. I drink it while checking my Facebook and mails. Then I will do some kind of stretching or a quick yoga session with sun salutations if I feel like to :). Before I take a shower, I dry brush 2-3 times a week to support my immune system and keep a soft and glowing skin.

Go-to juice or smoothie

A Pina Colada inspired smoothie: coconut milk, pineapple and spinach! So yum!

What supplements do you take

I take an ayurvedic herb called shatavari to balance my hormones, a supplement with magnesium, calcium and potassium citrates, and an omega-3 rich oil.

Your fave kitchen tool

My mandolin: good for slicing all kinds of veggies into beautiful salads 🙂

Only 5! Wow that’s hard. Ok, 1: EVOO and 2: ghee, for cooking
3: ACV apple cider vinegar 4: basmati rice and canned sardines
5: spices (turmeric, cumin, cayenne, cardamom, etc.)

Favorite thing to cook for friends

A Thai inspired cauliflower rice salad, with lots of veggies and a peanut ginger sauce. You just grate cauliflower and lightly cook it in coconut milk, then add all kinds of seasonal veggies, crunchy red cabbage and coriander. Lather with sauce and voilà! Recipe here.

Favorite way to workout

Ashtanga yoga or a few series of squats exercises.

Strange wellness habit

So many lol! Brushing my teeth with coconut oil, not eating raw fruit with starchy stuff (cereals, bread), not drinking while eating, to name a few.

Favorite thing to wear

A colorful skirt with a white shirt.

Where would you like to travel

I want to go soon to Brazil, Jamaica, and India.

Your favorite healthy place in your city?

I like to go to Maison Plisson, to eat and shop good quality food.

One piece of health advice

Be kind to yourself. Adopt the 80/20 rule: healthy food 80% of the time, and don’t beat yourself up about the rest 😉
