Weekend in Philadelphia

Philadelphia was on our mind when we drove to another state to spend our weekend. Upon arrival we had our traditional dosas at Philadelphia Chutney Company (that’s been our arrival snack for the past three times we’ve been here), the usual dairy-free gelatos for dessert at Capogiro, but we also tried one new restaurant, a.kitchen. We had reservations for 9.30pm and when we arrived there was another 20 minute wait and the place was packed and very noisy. I wish they had warned us about the portion sizes because they were some really tiny plates. We both had their heirloom tomato salad for appetizer that was delicious because… Well, heirloom tomatoes are always delicious. Husband had some seafood tartar for main course and I had wild mushroom risotto. Not even lying, my portion was five forkfuls. And so was husband’s. 30 minutes and $100 later we were back on the streets of Philly looking for another place to go get our bellies full.

And so we found Alma De Cuba nearby. We’ve been there once before many, many years ago and liked it. Husband got his appetite satisfied at this place, but I didn’t have such luck. I ordered the $14 vegetarian empanada and for that kind of price I expected quite a few of them. But no, it was just one, cut in half. With some good sauce. I ate it with a smiley face and washed it down with Dark & Stormy. Maybe I was meant to stay hungry.
