Hot yoga is a broad term referring to any form of yoga that is practiced in a room that is heated to approximately 85 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity typically at 40-60 percent. This varies greatly with different studios and different teachers. I’ve been to yoga studios so hot that when you step in you’ll start sweating bullets within a minute or two, just by sitting down in the room. I do not enjoy yoga at such high temperatures, the milder the better. I feel like I run out of energy too fast when I overheat.
1. Practicing yoga in a heated room has similar effects to sitting in a sauna. The heat increases pulse rate and metabolism, allowing your blood vessels to become more flexible. This allows our circulatory systems to flow with greater ease, while increasing blood flow to the limbs. In addition, a body that is warmed up can twist, bend and stretch further, which allows for an internal organ massage. All inner glands, organs, ligaments and muscles will benefit.

3. Hot yoga creates a massive elimination of toxins in the body due to the large amount of sweating that occurs. It is possible to drop several pounds (which include oil, salts and water) during a class. Your body burns fat more effectively in the heat, and fat may redistribute and be used as energy during the class. You may notice a decrease in centimeters fairly quickly with consistent practice.
4. The increase in sweat also benefits our skin, after all, the largest organ of our body is the skin, and a 90-minute class will surely detoxify the pores.
5. Your body will become better equipped to fight infection with a hot yoga practice. Similar to when your body raises its temperature to fight infection, the raised temperature in the room will assist in improving T-cell function and the proper functioning of your immune system.
