Since we had rented a car in Helsinki it was easy to take a little trip to Finland’s second oldest town, Porvoo which is just about 45 min drive from Helsinki, The mosaic-like town plan with its maze of streets and irregularly shaped plots date back to the Middle Ages. Since then the town suffered many fires, but always the stubborn citizens rebuilt their houses on the same foundations.
The Old Porvoo district currently covers an area of 18 hectares, with 250 residential buildings and 300 outbuildings. Roughly 700 people live in this area. There are so many cute little boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bed & breakfasts and even hotels. You’ll also find eco hair salon Cielo (would’ve loved to henna my hair there), organic vegetarian restaurant Fredrikan Lahde, sample chocolates and ice cream at the Little Chocolate Factory or stop by for a glass of organic wine or cider at Porvoon Paahtimo. You can really spend a perfect day here.
We stopped for an adult beverage at restaurant Wanha Laamanni. Very cute place with both indoor and outdoor seating. If you’re planning on visiting Porvoo, check out this good site for everything Porvoo.
