5 Ways to Stay Healthy While Traveling

img_0124

I recently managed to get sick on the flight from San Francisco to Finland (that was a whopping 11 hours on the plane + another 7 on the airports) despite taking most precautions. I ate super healthy the morning before flight, took extra vitamins to build up my immune, brought healthy snacks to the flight, tried not to touch anything before disinfecting my seat area on the plane (seat belt buckle, touch screen etc.) with disinfecting wipes.

It could be though, that without taking these precautions I might have been sicker way longer than I was. I started feeling ill very sudden in the middle of the night and the next day I just stayed home. Luckily the next night I got a fever that killed the bug and then I started immediately my road to recovery.

I usually do get sick once a year and it lasts just 24-48 hours so it was right on time. I like to think that my body wants to put my immune system in test once per year to reset it.

5 Ways to Stay Healthy While Traveling

1.Pack healthy foods

  • Easy to transport and store: trailmix, granola bars, green juice and smoothie powders, organic herbal tea, organic oatmeal packs, dark chocolate for sweet cravings, chopped pineapple, mango, apple, grapes and so on.
  • For my last flight I brought with me apple slices with almond butter in between and crack bread with vegan tuna salad (smashed chickpeas, mayo, onion, mustard, salt, pepper, lemon juice, celery salt).

2. Plan

  • Research where the healthy restaurants, cafes and stores are near your hotel and the sights you’re planning to see. I always look up the closest juice bar so I know where to head first thing in the morning to get my green juice.img_5703

3. BYOB

  • Bring your own water bottle to make shakes with green and protein powders and to have water around at all times. You can fill the bottle at the hotel gym (which is what I usually do for filtered water). THIS is my favorite bottle.img_7865

4. Supplements

5. Eat from light to heavy

  • Fruit always on an empty stomach
  • Salad first before heavier foods

  4. Such a bummer, not a good way to start a trip. Great tips! I always seem to so many things that take up more room than my clothes, shaker cup, food, suppliments/probiotics, ect… Despite best efforts sometimes it isn’t enough. I know we are very healthy and rarely get sick and my whole family was shocked when we were sick over the holidays since nobody could remember the last time my family was sick other than a little upset tummy from eating too much or the wrong food. You do what you can and hope for the best.

  5. These are awesome tips! I travel for work and play and I tend to forget my supplements. I tend to consider adding magnesium to my regimen so thanks for putting that on my radar.

  6. Thank you, this post will be so very helpful for my upcoming family summer vacation! πŸ™‚

  38. I think sticking to routine as much as possible is always a good idea when traveling!

  39. These seem like great tips not only for travel, but for life in general! I try to snack well on the plane so I’m not gorging on salty chips, sodas, etc. and usually walk so much once I reach the destination, I don’t worry too much about food. I like the idea of finding a go-to place for breakfast though, that’s one way to get the day started right and feel motivated to keep eating well.

  40. Why should you always eat fruit on an empty stomach?

    1. Fruit breaks down the fastest in your digestive tract because it’s mostly water, therefore it travels the fastest as well.

If you eat heavier, slower traveling foods first they’ll block the fruit, causing a traffic jam, and the fruit will start fermenting in your belly and may cause discomfort, gas, bloating etc.

  41. Bringing healthy foods along with you when traveling can really make all the difference! I always try to bring some of my own snacks because when you’re in a new place, you don’t know how long it’ll take you to find food.
